How to Paint Brick Fireplace | Romabio Painted Brick Fireplace Ideas

A brick fireplace can be a focal point in your home that shows your style and ties in with other design elements in your home. However, if the color or finish of the fireplace isn’t working for you, it can make designing and decorating the space around it tricky. Whether it’s a traditional red brick fireplace or a previously painted fireplace that you’re just not loving, refreshing it with a high quality fireplace brick paint can be a gamechanger and transform your space.

In this blog post, we’re sharing painted brick fireplace ideas and walking you through the steps for how to paint a brick fireplace using our favorite Romabio paint products.

Can You Paint a Brick Fireplace That’s Already Painted?

Yes! Painting over a previously painted brick fireplace is possible, but it will require a bit of work (and patience). Removing paint from a porous surface like brick is challenging, but with the right techniques, it can be done. We share a few of our tried and true methods for removing paint from brick in this blog post

Once removed, you can go in with your new fireplace brick paint, such as Romabio Limewash, to give your fireplace an all new look.

Choosing the Right Romabio Fireplace Brick Paint

Romabio is our most trusted brand of paint for brick surfaces due to their durability, stunning finishes, and high-quality products. They offer a variety of options for brick paint, each designed to suit different styles and needs.

Their masonry products are known for their solid coverage, which is great if you want to completely cover your brick without peeling or chipping.

Their limewash products create a more whitewashed, antique, rustic look, which is perfect if you want some of your original brick to shine through.

Here’s a quick breakdown of their brick products:

  • Masonry Flat: Perfect for solid color coverage with a smooth, long-lasting finish. This paint resists peeling or chipping and can be tinted to match your desired color.
  • Masonry Textured: Adds a subtle texture to smooth brick and a smoother finish on rougher brick, ideal for creating a unique look. It’s also long-lasting and can be tinted to your liking.
  • Limewash: Creates a rustic, whitewashed look that highlights some of the original brick. Limewash is removable within the first 48 hours, offering flexibility to achieve the unique look you’re going after. It’s highly durable and requires little to no maintenance.
  • Lime Slurry: Creates a classic, textured finish similar to stucco. This option is excellent for unpainted brick.

How to Paint a Brick Fireplace

Step 1: Prep the Surface

Vacuum the fireplace surface to ensure there are no pieces of brick or debris. Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dust, dirt, or grime.

Step 2: Prime the Surface

If you’re using a Romabio masonry paint, you must go in first with the Romabio MicroGrip primer to ensure proper adhesion. Let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Apply Your Romabio Paint Product

Using a high-quality brush, apply the paint starting at the top of the fireplace and work your way down to avoid drips or smudges.

Step 4: Let Dry

Allow the brick to dry for 24 hours. If you’re using limewash, you can wash off some of the paint to achieve a more distressed look and let some of the natural brick shine through. This must be done within the first 48 hours. After 48 hours, the limewash will be fully cured and you won’t be able to remove it.

Step 6: Seal the Finish

For Romabio masonry paints, you’ll need to seal the finish with a topcoat of Romabio Mineral Shield. This will protect the surface and enhance the durability of your fireplace’s paint job.
